CREDITS ANNOUNCER
Previously on Putting 2&2 Together...

DAVID
I have told you everything there is to know about me. Is it too much to ask for the same thing from you?

RACHEL
What are you saying? If I don't marry you, it's over?

DAVID
We don't have much of a future if you can't give me a reason why.

New segment.

DAVID
You sure you're okay with my being here?

TOMMY
You're my friend.

DAVID
Thank you.

TOMMY
Crash here if you need to.

DAVID
And where will you sleep?

New segment.

DAVID
Okay, Tommy, what is it with you and the bear anyway?

TOMMY
He's the last thing Steven ever gave me. Edgar here has helped me through a lot over the years.

New segment.

TOMMY
That exclusive contract they offered me is gonna keep me pretty busy.

DAVID
Make sure you really want it. I would hate to see you waste the next three years focusing on someone else's creations.

New segment.

TOMMY
What?

DAVID
I'm just looking.

TOMMY
I know that. Why?

New segment.

TOMMY
What the fuck are you doing kissing me?

New segment.

DAVID
I just know my feelings for you are separate. They have nothing to do with her.

New segment.

TOMMY
If you had never met Rachel, and we met the same way, would you have been interested in me?

New segment.

RACHEL
I need you to go.

DAVID
I do love you, Rachel.

RACHEL
And I love you, but right now, I really need to hate you.

END MONTAGE

INT. HOTEL — CORRIDOR

CREDITS ANNOUNCER
Wednesday, May 19. Three months before the events of Episode One.

An opening burst of music plays.

An elevator door opens and Tommy steps out. He wanders down the corridor talking on his cell phone.

TOMMY
For the last time, Erikka. I'm not interested. — Yeah. I know you went through a lot of hoops to secure the contract. And I'm flattered. I really am, but... I wanna do something else. — I know it's the number one book. I'm kinda one of those folks responsible. — Yeah, well it doesn't mean much if I'm not enjoying it. — I don't know. How about something creator-owned? — Excuse me, did I say something funny? — Right. — Uh huh. — Uh huh. — Yeah. — Uh huh. — Erikka. — Erikka! —  Sorry, that was my fault. I put a question mark at the end. That should've been an exclamation point. — Uh huh. — Yeah. I know you guys don't do that. And there's the problem. — No. Without a signed contract, I don't have to do anything. — Hey. Those are my terms. Or I'm walking. — Never mind what I'm gonna do instead. — Oh that's real professional. — Hello? Hello?!
(that wasn't supposed to happen)
Fuuuuuuuuuuck!

A door opens next to him. David steps out. Tommy hears this but doesn't immediately look in his direction.

TOMMY
Sorry. Just having a really bad — [day.]

DAVID
I thought that was you.

TOMMY
(oh shit)
David.

The opening credits play.

INT. HOTEL — CORRIDOR OUTSIDE DAVID'S ROOM

DAVID
How'd you know where I was staying?

TOMMY
(annoyed)
I didn't.

DAVID
Then why are you — [here?]

TOMMY
I wasn't at the hotel to see you. Believe me.

DAVID
(wasn't expecting that)
Wow. Hello to you too.

TOMMY
Seriously. Does it even matter, Clark?

DAVID
Why are you being such a jerk [to me?]

TOMMY
Four weeks. It's been four weeks since you left — [my apartment.]

DAVID
I know how long — [it's been.]

TOMMY
You don't think I've been wondering?

DAVID
Hey! Did you call me at all? During that time? It's a two way street, y'know.

TOMMY
I texted you!

DAVID
Once!

TOMMY
You didn't even do that much. I figured you'd at least respond.

DAVID
Well excuse me for trying to figure out what to do with my life.

TOMMY
I have just as many pieces to pick up as you do. More!

DAVID
This isn't a — [contest!]

TOMMY
And I was giving you space to do what — [you needed to.]

DAVID
All right — [then.]

TOMMY
For the first two weeks. No. Make that three. Then it was obvious that you just didn't — [give a shit.]

DAVID
Is that you putting two and two together again?!

TOMMY
What if it is?!

DAVID
Then you're wrong.

TOMMY
Bull. Shit. If you cared — even a little bit. I would've heard something.

DAVID
Tommy.

TOMMY
Have a nice life, David.

DAVID
(rage)
Tommy!
(tries to calm down)
Can you please... just come inside? So we don't give the rest of the hotel a free show?

TOMMY
[Sighs]

DAVID
I just want to talk.

TOMMY
I don't...

DAVID
If nothing else, you deserve to get your teddy bear back.

TOMMY
You have Edgar in there?

DAVID
Of course. I wouldn't let anything happen to him.

TOMMY
(beat)
Fine. I'll give you fifteen minutes.

DAVID
How generous of you.

TOMMY
I can make it ten if you want.

Tommy walks past David into the room. David closes the door behind them.

INT. HOTEL — DAVID'S ROOM — CONTINUOUS

DAVID
Sit down.

TOMMY
I'll stand.

DAVID
Suit yourself.

TOMMY
So...?

DAVID
I want to apologize. To you.

TOMMY
For?

DAVID
You name it.

TOMMY
Oh, I will.

DAVID
But I need you to apologize too.

TOMMY
For what?!

DAVID
The state of this conversation for starters!

TOMMY
(he doesn't mean it)
Sorry.

DAVID
You seem to think I'm the only one who fucked up.

TOMMY
I never said that!

DAVID
You didn't — [have to]

TOMMY
Wait. Did you really just say "fucked?"

DAVID
Yeah. Why?

TOMMY
I don't think I've ever heard you swear before.

DAVID
Seriously?!

TOMMY
I'm just saying.

DAVID
Yeah? Well, fuck you! How's that? Does that make you fuckin' happy?!

TOMMY
Now who's the jerk?

DAVID
I want to talk to my friend. Any idea where he might be?

TOMMY
(painfully genuine)
I wish I knew.

DAVID
Well, yours is right here, so...

TOMMY
(completely serious)
I'd love to believe that.

DAVID
Enough! I am.

TOMMY
I'm not trying to be a jerk. I just —

DAVID
You just are.

TOMMY
(genuine this time)
Sorry.

DAVID
What are you doing here? Besides yelling at your editor. And me?
(no response)
Tommy?

TOMMY
I'd... rather not say.

DAVID
(he's figured it out)
We're at a hotel. I know why I'm here. No place else to – [live.]

TOMMY
Please don't make me — [tell you.]

DAVID
Unless I slept at my office. Shower at the gym maybe. Not very practical — [though.]

TOMMY
Please.

DAVID
You, on the other hand. You have a place. Unless something's changed that I don't know about.

TOMMY
Please leave it — [alone.]

DAVID
Local comic convention? Didn't notice any cos-players. And you did quit, so that's — [probably not...]

TOMMY
(quickly)
I was gonna hook up with a trick, okay?

DAVID
(beat, hurt)
And there it is.

TOMMY
You have to — [understand.]

DAVID
Hey, you don't need my permission.

TOMMY
I didn't want — [to —]

DAVID
To tell me? Yeah. You made that perfectly clear.

TOMMY
This is not a conversation I wanna have with you.

DAVID
So you've gone from picking up pieces to picking up fuck-buddies.

TOMMY
You're actually jealous.

DAVID
You know what? Just get out.

TOMMY
That's mature.

DAVID
I said get out!

TOMMY
I still have ten minutes left.

DAVID
You can have 'em back!

TOMMY
Stop it.

DAVID
I don't know why I thought you — [might actually...]

TOMMY
I couldn't do it!

DAVID
What?

TOMMY
The trick. I couldn't.

DAVID
Couldn't or couldn't?

TOMMY
I stood him up.

DAVID
(wow)
Oh.

TOMMY
I drove here. Got on the elevator. Hit the button. Door opened... Door shut. And I... went back to the ground floor. That's when Erikka called. So I just wandered down the halls until I was done.

DAVID
And you ended up at my door.

TOMMY
Oddly.

DAVID
There's gotta be a special term for that level of coincidence.

TOMMY
I'm sure there is.

DAVID
Imagine if you didn't stand him up. And then she called.

TOMMY
Don't.

DAVID
Why didn't you go through with it?

TOMMY
(beat)
I'm pretty sure you know the answer to that... For all the good it does me.

DAVID
I think I might move back to San Diego.

TOMMY
What?

DAVID
I've been thinking about it. A lot.

TOMMY
You fucking coward.

DAVID
I'm doing this for you!

TOMMY
Are you kidding me?!

DAVID
No. Tommy. Listen to me! I have done nothing but hurt the people closest to me. You. Rachel. I can't go on — [doing that!]

TOMMY
How about that? I actually got first billing. Or is that chronological? I lost track.

DAVID
I don't want to keep hurting you. I thought maybe if I left you could —

TOMMY
I could what?!

DAVID
Forget me.

TOMMY
How convenient for you.

DAVID
Tommy.

TOMMY
How can I possibly forget you?!

DAVID
I don't know.

TOMMY
From the day I met you, you were the one person I could count on. You had every right to hate me that day and yet you stood up to my dad for me.

DAVID
Tommy!

TOMMY
On the day you were supposed to make a good impression — with Rachel, you kicked him out. For me. How am I supposed to forget that?!

DAVID
You've gotta try. Please.

TOMMY
God damn it, David! You helped me get over Steven's suicide!

DAVID
And in one fell swoop I hurt Rachel, you. I really hurt you. My best friend. I hurt you when all you wanted to do was help me.

TOMMY
You kissed me. That's all.

DAVID
No, no. No. That was not all. We both know there was more to that. There was so much more. So please. Just let me go.

TOMMY
You didn't listen when I said please.

DAVID
Well, be a better man than I am.

TOMMY
No. I'm not gonna play this pity party. 'Cause you know what? I will win. Hands down. Thanks to you, I lost my best friend, my sister, and the one parent who actually gave a damn.

DAVID
What happened with — [your mother?]

TOMMY
I listened to you. I had a three-year exclusive contract ready to sign. And I listened to you. Well, you heard how that turned out.

DAVID
Yeah. You stood up for yourself.

TOMMY
And she called my bluff. Now what am I gonna do?

DAVID
What you've always wanted.

TOMMY
Don't you know? I never get what I want.

DAVID
You got the contract offer.

TOMMY
Apparently I didn't want it.

DAVID
And that's my fault?

TOMMY
Yeah. You made me see the lie.

DAVID
Then I guess I can blame you right back.

TOMMY
For?

DAVID
I thought I had it all. I was gonna get married. Start a family. With a woman I could tell anything to. Who would do the same for me. Funny how none of that turned out to be true. Well, maybe I could tell her anything, but the other stuff? All a delusion.

TOMMY
David.

DAVID
You know what the biggest one was though?

TOMMY
What?

DAVID
I thought what I wanted was important. I should've listened to what I needed.

TOMMY
And what's that?

DAVID
Something I can't have.

TOMMY
Boy, you say I talk in riddles.

DAVID
Oh come on. Do I have to spell it out for you?

TOMMY
I don't know why that surprises you.

DAVID
God, for such a know-it-all, you're — [totally clueless sometimes.]

TOMMY
Here we go again.

DAVID
Don't.

TOMMY
No. Tell me. Go ahead. What? What? What exactly do you need that you can't have?

DAVID
You, you idiot.

TOMMY
(long pause)
Me?

DAVID
Yes.

TOMMY
You need me?

DAVID
That's what I said.

TOMMY
(almost calm, but confused)
But... What... You said... San Diego.

DAVID
You said it yourself. I ruined your life. I don't want to hurt you. I never did.

TOMMY
David.

DAVID
Believe what you want about me. But know this. Hurting you is the last thing I ever want to do in this life.

TOMMY
Are you... are you saying — [what I...]

DAVID
Tommy. I love you. Completely. With all my heart.

TOMMY
(refusing to cry)
No. You, you, you... you can't mean that.

DAVID
I do. I love you. I have from the day I met you.

TOMMY
Stop. What about my sister?

DAVID
Rachel's over.

TOMMY
She'll come around.

DAVID
I don't want her to.

TOMMY
But you love her.

DAVID
I love you.

TOMMY
No.

DAVID
I've had a lot of time to think. A lot of time.

TOMMY
No.

DAVID
Yes. It wasn't right. I see that now.

TOMMY
You're wrong.

DAVID
No. Tommy. Listen. I should've seen you. The way I see you now. The way I saw you the night I kissed you.

TOMMY
David.

DAVID
And it kills me that I hurt you both 'cause I didn't see you.

TOMMY
(still fighting tears)
This. This - this can't be real.

DAVID
(fighting back his own tears)
You don't have to say it back. We both know how you feel. That's not what this is about. Too much has happened. I know we can't —

Tommy finally stops fighting his tears and pulls David into a passionate kiss.

TOMMY
(in between kissing)
I love you. I love you. I love you so much, David.

They continue for a bit longer until David pulls away.

DAVID
(freaking out)
Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Whoa. Whoa.

TOMMY
What?

DAVID
This is... this is too...

TOMMY
David, calm down.

DAVID
I want to, I want to, I want to, but...

TOMMY
It's okay. I want this too. I love you.

DAVID
We shouldn't. I don't want to hurt you.

TOMMY
I don't wanna hurt you either. But that felt so right.

DAVID
(catching his breath)
It did. It really did.

TOMMY
(humored)
Now I know what I was like the last time this happened.

DAVID
Don't make fun of me.

TOMMY
I'm not. Believe me, I'm not. I can't believe this is...

DAVID
I'm so fucking scared right now.

TOMMY
Me too. I don't know what any of this means.

DAVID
I guess I can't ask where we go from here then.

TOMMY
You can ask. Doesn't mean I have any answers.

DAVID
[Laughs slightly]

TOMMY
What?

DAVID
I kinda have an idea. But it's probably way too soon. If you know what I mean.

TOMMY
Well, that didn't take you too long to get over.

DAVID
Forgive me for fantasizing.

TOMMY
I'm pretty sure I beat you to that fantasy.

DAVID
Hey, just because I said no when we met, doesn't mean I didn't imagine it.

TOMMY
Even if you did, I still saw you first. Which means...

David kisses Tommy.

DAVID
Does this mean I still have to give you the bear back?

TOMMY
Excuse me, what?

DAVID
Edgar. Your teddy bear. The one you lent to cheer me up. The only reason you agreed to — [talk in here.]

TOMMY
Oh! That! Him.
(laughs)
So not what I thought you meant.

DAVID
What'd you think — [I meant?]

TOMMY
You meant bear. Back. I heard bareback.

DAVID
Oh!

TOMMY
[Laughs]

DAVID
(uneasy laughter)
Yeah. Not what I meant.

TOMMY
A likely story. No, you can keep him for a little while. — As long as I get to visit.

DAVID
He'd like that.
(beat)
Tommy. I want you to be honest with me.

TOMMY
I told you the truth. I never met up with the trick!

DAVID
No. Tommy. I believe you. And even if you did —

TOMMY
I didn't.

DAVID
I don't care.

TOMMY
You did.

DAVID
That doesn't matter.

TOMMY
It did before.

DAVID
That was before. And it's not what I'm asking.

TOMMY
I thought since we were talking about... that...

DAVID
Not even a little bit.

TOMMY
Oh. What are you —

DAVID
Do you think we might actually have a chance? Together?

TOMMY
I don't know. There's so much stacked against us. You know there's gonna be a lot of drama.

DAVID
There was a lot of drama in here and look where we ended up.

TOMMY
This was a cakewalk compared to —

DAVID
Especially where Rachel's concerned.

TOMMY
Ooooh yeah.

DAVID
Yeah. I really hurt her.

TOMMY
Yeah, but don't forget. She also hurt you.

DAVID
Apples and oranges. Doesn't make me feel better.

TOMMY
No.

DAVID
How bad was it for you?

TOMMY
Bad. But I'll deal with it.

DAVID
You could always run away with me to San Diego.

TOMMY
No.

DAVID
We can be fucking cowards together.

TOMMY
Maybe someday. But I can't leave now. And I think you know you can't either.

DAVID
Right. I wasn't really serious. — Well, I was before, but I'm joking now.

TOMMY
(slight laugh)
I don't think I'll ever get used to you saying "fuck" though.

DAVID
How about me doing it instead?

TOMMY
(laughs)
David!

DAVID
I know. When the time's right. You are an amazing kisser though.

TOMMY
Really?

DAVID
Yeah.

TOMMY
I'm actually surprised at that.

DAVID
Why? Why would you be surprised?

TOMMY
You promise you won't laugh?

DAVID
No.

TOMMY
(snicker)
Besides Steven, I've never kissed a guy before.

DAVID
Huh?

TOMMY
I mean it.

DAVID
You're not telling me that — [you're a...]

TOMMY
No! I just never did that part of it.

DAVID
But other parts...?

TOMMY
Oh yeah. Lots of times. Nothing to worry about in that department.

DAVID
I was gonna say. That would've been a lot of pressure on your trick.

TOMMY
Can we not bring that up again?

DAVID
How come you never — [kissed?]

TOMMY
Steven. 'Cause of what happened after we... Y'know. Dad and all that...

DAVID
That never even occurred to me.

TOMMY
Yeah.

DAVID
Fuck.

TOMMY
We never got to that part. For the record.

DAVID
You didn't need to tell me.

TOMMY
Too late.

DAVID
(laughs)
I love you.

TOMMY
I love you.

DAVID
So the big question...

TOMMY
Yes?

DAVID
What exactly do we get when we put one and one together?

TOMMY
(groans)
Oh, man! That's bad.

DAVID
You're just mad 'cause you didn't think of it.

TOMMY
Yeah. That's it.

DAVID
Thought so.

TOMMY
Just shut up and kiss me already.

The end credits play.
